Willow Creek Video

Here’s a YouTube find from last summer’s Willow Creek Arts Conference. It’s Don talking about his church, Imago Dei.

Hi Bryan,
I too am a fan of Don Miller. In fact, his book BLUE LIKE JAZZ inspired me to write a book. I took six chapters and a book proposal to a writer’s conference in California, and several months later WaterBrook Press/Random House offered me a contract. The book is coming out in a week (Feb. 19th)
You see, Don’s book was fantastic in his storytelling style, sharing his unfolding discovery that God was real, and Christianity offered truth. But his book left me hanging because he doesn’t show you what it looks like to know God. That’s when I thought, I should write a book: CLOSER THAN YOUR SKIN: Unwrapping the Mystery of Intimacy with God
Everywhere I go, I meet people who say they have all the ingredients of their faith—they pray, attend church, read the Bible, and give money to the poor. Yet, their cake isn’t baked because they don’t know God. And what’s worse, they don’t know what to do about it.
If Christianity is all about restoring relationship with God, there must be more to the story. Yet when you consider all the Christian books, tapes, and programs on the market, the relational aspect of the Christian faith seems sorely underdeveloped. Why tell others our faith is “not a religion, but a relationship with God,†if we can’t unpack the cliché? Honest seekers are left hanging.
In Closer Than Your Skin, I tell authentic and transparent stories from my own life that show God is real and can be known. I write not as an authority, but as one sharing my notes along the way.
Sensing the inklings of God’s presence and learning to hear his voice was like learning a new language—I started with the written Word and gradually discerned the nuances of God’s voice. He was in the crises, but also the mundane events of life. Soon, intimacy with God was no longer wishful thinking. He was accessible, approachable and interested in making contact. I only had to ask and believe it was possible in the first place. After all, God, Himself said:
“You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. And I will be found by you.†(Jeremiah 29:13-14a)
My hope is that the reader will find something beyond the familiar and the formulaic, and experience relationship with God for themselves.
Just wondering if you are interested in reviewing the book or doing a possible article? I can send you a copy if so. You can also contact me at 406-580-0773/587-2232. Thanks Bryan,
Susan Hill
