what folks are saying…

Published by bryan | Filed under weblog reviews

here’s what some folks around the interwebs have been saying directly and indirectly about Don lately…

+ Jared Wilson, in his blog The Gospel-Driven Church, says, “I’ll admit I didn’t get Donald Miller’s Blue Like Jazz like everyone else apparently did. I read it and the message appeared to me to be “Look how cool I am!”".

+ Jenny, in her blog, says that she enjoyed To Own a Dragon, but she has been disappointed by Searching for God Knows What and Blue Like Jazz.  Despite proclaiming “that boy can write.”, she notes that “Miller is well known for being a part of this movement (emerging church) that prides itself on engaging a postmodern culture”.

(As most of you here know, Don has never claimed to be a part of the emerging church movement, and despite feeling a kindred spirit with those in the movement, sees himself as someone of an outsider. I think he usually just gets lumped in with that movement because he is young and thinks outside the box, but i suppose that’s up for debate.)

+ Danny has written a poem based on the line from Blue Like Jazz that says “The greatest lie that i have ever had to contend with is this, ‘that life is a story about me’.” (Danny mentioned he was thinking about taking the poem down, so who knows how long it will stay up there.)

+ Erin Dienst quotes Don from Searching for God Knows What in her brief article Don’t forget about the big picture for the Daily Evergreen.

I wanted Don Miller to know that his book Through Painted Deserts took me on a roadtrip, exactly when I needed one. My Mom was in the hospital for 37 of 62 days this summer with lymphoma in the 4th stage. My mind was overwhelmed and my spirit was being tugged from so many directions. My husband and girls where miles away and I needed a mental health break. Thanks for taking the time to put your journey down in this book. I was able to see the places you painted and feel your struggles with life in general. You pulled the stunt we all have wanted to do but either didn’t have the courage or felt too many ties to our current situations. I just plowed through To Own a Dragon in four days. I like the fact that you say what many of us never would in the ‘church’. It makes my heart explode with laughter at times and my brain think harder about what is important…maybe even more about what isn’t. Your transparency is refreshing.

I don’t see what is wrong with a Christian being ‘cool’. I kinda got the same impression out of BLJ. I especially thought Don was cool during the Reed College portions, the confessional, the interaction with the young lady who discovered Jesus in France when she read the gospels while smoking cigarettes and eating chocolate. Her discovery that Jesus would ‘like’ her… impacts me to this day.

When I recommend this or any book to others, I say “Don makes Christians look cool”.

  3. Kerry Anne Miner Says:

I just wanted to thank you all for this “mission” that has been established. I picked up BLJ a week after my husband was murdered, and it was an amazing wake up call to the fact that despite my pain, this is not all about me. The book has reminded me of Christ’s calling on my life and all our lives. Thank you. I look forward to reading To Own a Dragon - hopefully it will give me some insight for my boys.

I thought Blue Like Jazz was excellent, in fact I love how he related life to jazz. As a jazz nut and musician it just made sense.

Searching for God Knows What has really helped me refine my life and the ministry I am involved in. Both where great reads.

  5. Cindy Fiala Says:

I read BLJ on the recommendation from a friend and loved it! My daughter just recently moved back to Portland and has really struggled the last few years with her christianity, I believe God brought this book into my radar for her. I sent it off to her yesterday… Thanks for blowing apart the boxes that we’ve built and put God into over the last few centuries!
