finally home

I returned home from 30 days on the road last night. I made a deal with the “powers that be” that I would travel for a month if I could stay home for a while to finish writing the Adam Bybee book and work on other projects. In all, it was a rough but great 30 days. If I never sleep in another hotel room I’ll be better for it. However, I deeply enjoyed meeting people everywhere from Arizona to Boston to Chicago, Atlanta, Birmingham, Indiana and on and on. I’m amazed at how many fascinating people there are in the world. To those of you I met in person, thanks for your kindness.
Hilights from the trip included spending two days in Chicago with my friends David and Ashley (including a Sunday night game at Soldier field), meeting the folks at Willow Creek and connecting with new friends there, getting to hang out with dear friends in Atlanta, having my friends Mike and Joy come down to Atlanta for a few days, interviewing my pastor Rick McKinley at Catalyst, spending time with Steve Taylor and Ben Pearson working on a screenplay about Blue, meeting my friend Jim’s two sons in Boston, and connecting with Jena Lee and a group of Nashville pals at the Ryman Auditorium for a terrific Shawn Colvin concert. And then seeing my old friend Steve Parker in Alabama, and doing a show with Derek Webb. I also got to meet Chad Gibbs there in Birmingham, who is one of the funniest writers around. And then, of course, coming home, staying up late with my roomates talking about the same stuff we always talk about, and then all of us watching a movie about Napolean until one in the morning. And then waking up in the morning to find my friend Kaitie had made soup and left it in my fridge. Life is good.

Don,
When you get back to Atlanta someday, I too would like to see you again. I met you last year after Catalyst and really enjoyed your presence.
And, yes, life is very good.
Take care,
Mark

I saw you in Indiana where, as you said, there’s nothing to do but run through cornfields. Which is true. But if you live here, you can also make beds and dust knick-knacks, so it’s not so bad. (What I wouldn’t give for a little indie film house, though! Just for the weekends…)
Anyways, thanks for coming to our little bible-belt-buckle town. We don’t get many celebrities in these here parts. heh heh.

It was great to see you, I am very proud of you. I hope Steven and Stephanie will get to see you sometime soon. I loved seeing you and seeing Jars of Clay. I also got to visit with you Mother. Thank you for that opportunity. Love Dorothy

Not only was Blue Like Jazz amazing (just read it)… you listen to the brilliant Shawn Colvin. Rock on. Keep doing what you are doing for people like me that wish we were doing what we should be doing… humble thanks.
