reading Rushdie

The new issue of www.burnsidewriterscollective.com has been up for a while, so do check it out if you’ve not seen it since it released on the fifteenth.

I recently had a terrific time at the Festival of Faith and Writing on the campus of Calvin University in Grand Rapids. If you’ve not heard of the event, it’s a wonderful festival where many writers of many genre’s converge to talk about their work, literature in general, and meet with those who love books. The festival takes place every two years, so if you’re a book lover, you might want to look into it for 2008.

A hilight of the festival was hearing Salmon Rushdie speak. Rushdie came to most of the worlds attention when he released his book “Satanic Verses” about ten years ago. Rushdie had to go into hiding as the Iranian government issued a decree to have him killed.

Salmon Rushdie is an avowed atheist, and yet spoke eloquently of the obviousness of the miraculous in our daily lives, and the beauty of the reality in which we live. I got the feeling he is a man who wants there to be a God, but has yet to experience that which transcends the scientific. I’ll be reading a few more of his books after having heard him speak.

Nothing much else to report. I’m in a house on Lake Michigan, working on the Adam Bybee book, but look forward to heading back to Portland soon.

    Don,
I don’t know if you check these comments at all, but if you are going to be looking to read another Rishdie book, I might suggest “The ground benieth her feet”. It’s all about rock ‘n roll, and a good read.

I didn’t happen to make it to the Festival of Faith and Writing Conference, but when I heard you were in town, I rushed to purchase a ticket for the public forum. Nicely done! I love what you have to say. I’ve read each of your books and am eagerly waiting for the next. You speak the truth and speak it well both in word and speech. Your words on nakedness and light were beautiful. I was wondering if you had a copy of the public forum at Calvin. I would buy it in a heartbeat.
